absolution and forgiveness

My father forgot me until it was his time to die, and then, with a phone call, I was expected to leap two thousand miles overnight to hold his hand and offer absolution and forgiveness. I did not. And I felt nothing, nothing at all, as I said a very harsh thing to a dying man, hung up the phone, and returned to what was, in the end, just another day.
