night on planet earth

the weapons have been cleaned and oiled

and rest now on racks in perfect rows

waiting for tomorrow’s battle

some of the soldiers rest as well

but some are wide awake

staring into the darkness

night on planet earth

pork chops defrosting on an old chipped plate

with watery drops of pig blood reflecting light

from the warm beautiful sun

a light as soft as a touch

dappled across the windows

filtered as it is by the green leaves

of the crape myrtle trees

that are taller than the old house

Joy creates a spaciousness in the mind that allows us to hold the suffering we experience inside us and around us without becoming overwhelmed, without collapsing into helplessness or despair.

-James Baraz

Raise your words, not your voice. It is rain that grows flowers, not thunder.

May some kindness find you today, which also means I hope you share some kindness today. I'll try, too. Life is as good as we make it.

The first step in compassion is to notice the other’s need. It all begins with the simple act of attention.

-Daniel Goleman
